Leland Glen Craver
U.S. Veteran Leland Craver, 90 of Pella and formerly of New Sharon passed away Monday, August 3, 2009 at the Comfort House in Pella. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Saturday, August 8, 2009 at the Harden Funeral Home with Reverend Sheldon Starkenburg of the Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Pella officiating. Interment will follow at the Friends Cemetery in New Sharon with full military honors given by the Coffin-Miller American Legion Post #446. Visitation will begin after 1:00 pm Friday, August 7, 2009 at the funeral home with the family present to greet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 Friday evening. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Christian Opportunity Center. Friends may give condolences or sign the online guest book at www.hardenfuneralhomes.com. Harden Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Leland Glen Craver, son of Glen B. and Opal (Stanley) Craver was born on November 28, 1918 in Taintor, Iowa. He was a 1937 graduate of New Sharon High School. Leland was drafted by the United States Army in October of 1941, where he served in the European Theater. He was honorably discharged in September of 1945. On September 15, 1945, Leland was united in marriage to Katherine Fleming in Oskaloosa, Iowa. To this union four children were born, Vivian, Carolyn, Dennis, and Kenneth. Leland worked for Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids for 24 years before retiring in 1983. After retirement Leland and Katherine wintered in Arizona. He had a passion for restoring and working on cars. Leland also enjoyed the sport of baseball, photography, camping, and listening to music. He often read car and science magazines. Leland was a member of the New Sharon United Methodist Church and the Coffin-Miller American Legion Post #446.
His memory is honored by his wife of 63 years, Katherine Craver of Pella; two daughters, Vivian (Allen) Kiene of Broomfield, Colorado, and Carolyn Craver of Oskaloosa, and a son, Kenneth (Jacki) Craver of Pella; four grandchildren, Jeremy (Becky) Kiene, Ben Kiene, Desha (Jeff) Bruxvoort and Jessemynn (Doug) Kanis; and three great-grandchildren, Lawson Bruxvoort, Zeb Kanis and Kenzie Kanis. Leland was preceded in death by his parents, Glen and Opal Craver; a son Dennis Craver and his brother, Rex Craver.
