He received his education in Davidson County and attended Fisk University receiving his B.A. degree.
For more than 25 years he served communities in and around the Middle Tennessee area as a dedicated teacher and a dependable friend, willing at all times to lend assistance with kind advice. he also taught at Turner College. He was a member of the Charity Lodge #82 F.A.M. and the Grand Lodge.
He was a member of the Bedford County Training School (BCTS), Shelbyville Tennessee, faculty and administration.
On May 16, 1928, he was married to Annie Lee Flack who preceded him in death over a year ago. To this union two sons were born.
At an early age he joined St. John A.M.E. Church in Nashville, TN. After moving to Shelbyville, he united with Woodfork A.M.E. Church and later became a member of the East Cedar Street Church of Christ.
Quietly and peacefully he entered into eternal rest Sunday, December 3, 1967, at 1:05 P.M. at a Nashville Hospital.
He is survived by two sons, W.J. Laird, Jr. and Johnny L. Laird both of Nashville; one brother, Ewing Akin of Chicago, IL; one brother-in-law, Mr. John T. Flack, Sr. of Shelbyville, TN; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Lueddith Flack of Shelbyville, TN; Mrs. Ida Akin of Chicago, IL; two daughters-in-law and six grandchildren; and a host of nephews, nieces, and other relatives and friends.
