Canton, CT was incorporated by the legislature as a town in 1806, because of the inconvenience that its inhabitants suffered in having to go to Simsbury to vote. James Humphrey was town clerk until 1829; William H. Hallock succeeded him. In 1837 Hallock's house was burned, and all the town records destroyed.
