Dedication Ceremony:
The descendants of Pioneer Settler Lt. Moses Barker are joining with Italy Community residents to honor this Revolutionary War Hero. On October 16th 2000, a government stone will be dedicated at the grave of Lt. Barker in Barker Naples Cemetery. Moses Barker, his wife Lydia Gutterman Barker, and nine children, came by two wheeled ox cart from Massachusetts to Italy Hill. He cleared the land, hewed logs, built buildings, and made a living for his family, which increased to thirteen. The eighth child of Moses and Lydia was Elisha, born January 15, 1777. In 1814 Elisha settled on Lot 63, South Survey, Town of Italy. He built a sawmill and provided lumber and land to build a school house. He also provided the material to build the first church here, and set aside the land for the Barker Cemetery. This area was then known as "The Barker Settlement".

Elisha and his wife Thankful had eight children, the last being Elisha D, who married Clarissa Fisher. They had nine children. Three died in infancy, the other six married and have numerous descendants, some residing in this and nearby areas. These children of Elisha D Barker were Emerett who married John Kennedy. Alwilda, who married Francis Hiler, Ida married Edward C Barker, Geraldine married Grover Covel, Clara A (who for many years ran the Inn, now Orange Inn, Naples, NY) married Samuel Benjamin, Fred married Grace Lafler and resided on Race St in Naples until his death.

In the Barker Italy Naples Cemetery are the graves of Lt. Moses Barker, Thankful Strong Barker, Elisha D Barker, Fred Barker, Alwilda Barker Hiler, her children Alta and Grover Hiler and the daughter of Alta, Carrie Aleine Stone Steinbaugh. Participating in the ceremony will be Nelson and Norman Steinbaugh, sons of Aleine. Also present will be a number of descendents including Bruce Kennedy of Naples, Anna Fox Wixom, Clifford Stone of Naples, and others.

Military service of Moses Barker: Yeoman, Minuteman at Lexington, served in Mass Militia as Lt.
