He became interested in boxing, along with his four brothers when their Uncle Victor (Willie) Rosato, gave them 2 pairs of boxing gloves one Christmas, along with a punching bag.
Gerry was a promising boxer in the Featherweight Division.
He was an excellent and versatile artist, painting miniature oils to large murals; he also painted logos and pictures on sailboats and made up cartoons. One of his paintings of Peter Stuyvesant was exhibited by the New York Public Library, 5th Avenue and 42nd Street, N.Y.C.
One of Gerry's miniature oil paintings, a farm scene, is included in this Memorial. His older brother,Rocco, carried it in his wallet from the time of Gerry's death until his own death. It is the only painting of his in existence.
He married Minnie Orth and they had one daughter,Geraldine D'Amato, also a talented artist. He died before Geraldine was born on March 24, 1925.
Gerry's young life was ended at the age of 22, on October 24,1924, of gunshot wounds. Name on Certificate of Death: DaMato.
