Henry C. Higgins September 2, 1925 – April 8, 2010.

Surrounded by his family, Henry peacefully passed from this world to his Father above. He was born on September 2, 1925 in a log cabin in Lascassas, Tennessee, to parents, William Henry Harrison Higgins and Hessie Agnes Higgins. He married Velma Oneita King in Lascassas, Tennessee on June 12th, 1949.

Henry worked with the Veterans Administration for 36 years and retired in Grand Junction as the Chief of Medical Administration in 1980. Henry and Oneita moved to eight different states with the VA until they transferred to Colorado in 1969 and settled at their peach orchard on Rapid Creek, east of Palisade.

Henry was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ and a Freemason for over 50 years. He loved to fish, hunt and drive his Willys Jeep in the backcountry, but his favorite pastime was working with his two boys in his orchard and growing his peaches. He was a dedicated family man and also a neighbors' neighbor.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Oneita; his two sons: Coleman (May) and Chris (Kathy); a brother, Joe and a sister Ina, both residing in Tennessee. Henry was blessed with five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, one brother, and two sisters.

Henry is known by many for his poetry, which focused on his wife and religion. He always had a "ditty" ready for the offering.

A viewing is being held for his friends and family at Snell-McLean Mortuary in Palisade, Monday April 12 from 5 - 8:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held at the Grand Junction Church of Christ (29th and Patterson Rd) at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 13, 2010.

A graveside service will follow at the Palisade Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to United Cerebral Palsy of Colorado or to the Juvenile Diabetic Research Foundation.
