Maurice was the son of Denis Collins and Bridget Enright, who were married in Ballybunion, County Kerry, Ireland, on January 25, 1839. Maurice was baptised July 31, 1843, in the Roman Catholic Chapel in Abbeyfeale, Limerick County, Ireland. The picture at the right is the Old Abbeyfeale Graveyard, and it is within the walls of this burial ground that the RC Chapel stood. It was taken down shortly after the Christening of Maurice.

Also found are the Christenings of a sister, Johanna, and a brother John. It is assumed he died young in Ireland. Johanna immigrated to Peel County, Ont., probably with her mother and brother, Maurice. She married there and migrated to Michigan, as did Maurice. She and her husband, Denis O'Leary moved on to Toledo, Ohio, where they had one son, John. It was in Ohio that she died.

The Collins family immigrated to Ontario in the 1840s, but no record can be found of the father Denis. Bridget remarried a Patrick McAuliffe, also born Ireland, and they started another family in Peel County, Ontario. It was there that Maurice met and married Elizabeth Hayes, daughter of Samuel Hayes and Lydia Rowley of Newscastle, Staffordshire, England. They were married in Cooksville, Peel County, Ontario January 29, 1863. (Picture at the right) Then they immigrated into Michigan in 1865. They were the parents of Hannah, Henry, Henrietta, and Melvina. Maurice bought property in Royal Oak in Oakland County and lived there the rest of his life. I (Barbara Lewis) am the ggranddaughter of Maurice and Elizabeth Collins.
