Verda Lee (Smith) Bortnem was born October 5, 1933, on a farm near Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to Omar and Della (OIson) Smith. She died suddenly Friday, August 7, 1998, at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, at the age of 64.
Verda graduated from Brookings High School. Shee married Anton Langmeyer, Jr., in August 1952. He Died in 1963. In September 1964, Verda married Albert Bortnem. They farmed south of Brookings until retiring and moving into Brookings in 1984.
Verda was a member of Midway Lutheran Church, rural Colman, and the Midway Lutheran Church Women. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
Survivors include her husband, Albert, of Brookings; six children: Vicki Ramaekers and her husband Dan of White Bear Lake, Minnesota, Alden Bortnem and his wife Teresa of Brookings, Patty Bortnem of Sioux Falls, Kathy Hansen and her husband Robi of Madison, South Dakota, Bruce Bortnem of Brookings, and Beth Bouska and her husband Todd of Sioux Falls: eight grandchildren Ben, Tom, and John Ramaekers, Chad and Andrew Bortnem Jared and Nicole Hansen, and Lacey Bortnem; a sister, Delva Jackson of Marshall, Minnesota; and a brother, Gordon Smith and his wife Ruth, of Sioux Falls. Verda was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, a sister, and two brothers.

Funeral Services: 2:00 P.M. Monday, August 10, 1998 @ Midway Lutheran Church rural Colman, South Dakota
