During the winters of 1906-1907 he attended the St. Olaf academy, Northfield, Minn., after which he started in farming.
On February 16, 1915, he was united in marriage to Mary Caroine Thompson. Two children were born to them, Sadie Cordelia, age 4 years, and Avis Irene, age 2 years. Mrs. Bortnem and children are living to mourn the loss of a good husband and father. The other bereaved relatives are his father, A. J. Bortnem, and his full sister and brother, Mrs. Nora Thompson and Clifford Bortnem, and Mrs. James Bortnem, and Mrs. James Bortnem, Volga, S. D.; Mrs. John Jesme, Brookings, S. D., and Rev. Henry Langum, Driscoll, N. D., half sisters and brother.
Albert Bortnem was an exceptionally fine character. Everyone who knew him speaks well of him because there was something about him that was so likable. Deep down in his nature was embedded a sincere regard for what was right, proper and good and he lived accordingly.
As a farmer he was of the progressive type, always looking ahead, always willing to try out anything that seemed an improvement on former farm methods.
Albert Bortnem has been in rather poor health for the last two or threee years, but it was from the effects of appendicitis that he died, the appendix having burst before the operation could be performed. He was doing very well seemingly after the operation and there were hopes of his recovery, when he suddenly passed away Sunday morning, April 11, 1929, at the age of 29 years, 6 months and 15 days.
Besides a loving wife and children and the other relatives mentioned, he leaves many other relatives and friends to mourn his sad departure.
Funeral services were held in the Lake Campbell church at 3:00 o'clock, Thursday, April 15.
