Marie was born in Nord Aurdal, Valdres, Norway to Lars Jevne and Kari Aavokseje. She came to America in 1871 at the age of two. On November 19, 1893 she married Nels Sale. Children: Emma (Martin) Thorhaug, Otto (Hazel), Clara (Anton) Steensrud, Bertha (Clarence) Steensrud, Edwin (Clementine), and Norman (Mildred). Marie's husbnad was struck and killed by a train just two months before her youngest son Norman was born leaving her to raise a family of seven children alone.
