Passing Away of Daniel Burns

In the passing away of Daniel Burns Saturday at 6:30 p.m., Coalgate lost one of her earliest citizens - a man who had amassed wealth and seen it slip through his fingers. At one time Dan Burns was reported to have been worth $30,000 clear of liabilities. He conducted a grocery store on Broadway. Every one's credit was good there with the result that all was gone in a short while with only charge slips as a reminder.
Daniel Burns was 66 years, 7 months and 19 days of age at the time of his death. He was born in County Clare, Donegal, Ireland May 10, 1862. He came to America with an uncle at the age of 14. They both entered the butcher business, but as this was not to his liking he went to work as a sailor on a ship sailing between New York and Liverpool.
Later he joined the British army and served an enlistment as soldier and sailor. After this he returned to the United States, first locating in Pennsylvania where he worked as a coal miner for awhile.
His next move was to the rich coal fields of Indian Territory, locating first at Savanna and was in Savanna mine explosion, but fortunately escaping injury.
The Lehigh coal fields were being opened and Mr. Burn's next move was to Lehigh. At Lehigh Mr. Burns met Miss Josephine Peters and they were united in marriage March 26, 1888. He was the father of four children, three sons and one daughter.
From Lehigh, the following year in April 1889, he is said to have built the first house erected in Coalgate, riding horseback to and fro until his home was completed. He helped sink old No. 1, better known as the "Slope" here. This mine was located where the County jail now stands.
It was during the time of development of the "Slope" that Mr. Burns lost his eye sight, caused from an explosion from a shot. During this time the miners fired their own shots.
For about 38 years Daniel Burns grooped his way in darkness for he was totally blind. This misfortune did not deter him from going into the grocery business with energy and a fair opportunity of success.
Later on he removed to North Coalgate, known also as Old Chocktow, where he was residing with his youngest son, James F. Burns at the time of his death.
Two years ago he was stricken with paralysis from the sapping effects of his vitality he never recovered.
Surviving are two sons and one daughter, W. F. Burns, a veteran of the world war, James F. Burns, of Coalgate, and Mrs. Josephine Kelley of Pittsburg, Kans., ten grand children and one brother, James Burns, who resides in Ireland.
Funeral services were held at the Catholic church in this city at 3:00 p. m. Monday and interment was in Lehigh cemetery.
