Note from Mickey Turner Anderson Menton Zanussi (22 June 2007):
Esther and her sisters, Lucretia and Erin, attended Horace Mann Junior High School and Lowell High School in San Fransisco. After graduating high school, they commuted across the SF Bay by ferry boat to attend the University of California, Berkeley.
In August, 1931, Esther was the 10,000 student to register for classes at UC Berkeley. Her picture was in the SF News/Call Bulletin. Esther and her sisters soon moved to Berkeley. They shared housing, meals, jobs, doing anything they could to get through school during the Depression. They were alternately best friends and worst enemies as they struggled to survive. They each managed to graduate though it took Esther 12 years, a marriage, two children and a World War before she graduated in 1943.
Esther initially went to work in San Francisco for Standard Oil Company (now Chevron). By war's end, she was a widow with two small children. Standard Oil terminated her employment to make room for returning GIs. After several short-term positions, Esther found herself back at UC Berkeley. This time as an employee of the University's Associated Student Body. She worked there until retirement in December, 1977, having achieved the position of Senior Bookkeeper.
My mother is one of the World's Great Unsung Heros. She went to college when very few women did and she did it during the toughest of times, finishing her last year as a single parent. She and my father had bought a home in 1940 and she managed to hang on to it during the war by taking in ship-yard workers as boarders.
In the 50's, Esther took care of her ailing parents, as well as her children. When she needed transportation to get to San Francisco after working in Berkeley, she bought a car and then asked the salesman to teach her to drive! In the 60's, Esther married the love of her life, John Douglas Howe. They had 30 wonderful years together. She was a very special lady.

Esther's siblings were:
1.Lucretia Elizabeth Belser SHOESMITH
2.Erin Amelia Belser CARTWRIGHT
