Betty Werlein Carter was born on Tuesday, July 19, 1910 in New Orleans, Louisiana. She was a well-born New Orleanian, and with her husband Hodding, who she married on October 14, 1931, led a scrappy newspaper in the Mississippi Delta to national prominence in the fight for civil rights. She died Thursday, March 2, 2000 at her home of complications of pulmonary hypertension. She was 89. After her husband died in 1972, she continued as president of the paper until its sale in 1980. She was born into the New Orleans family that founded Werlein's for Music. In addition to her sons: Spokesman and TV personality Hodding Carter III and New Orleans developer Philip Carter, she is survived by a sister; Lorraine Werlein Moore of Kiln, MS; six grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. A third son, Thomas Carter, died in 1964.
