From "Miss Allie Abernathy's Scrapbooks 1893 – 1923":

Death of Mr. J. W. Bonner.

Mr. John W. Bonner, son of Benj. and Caroline Bonner, was born in Troup County, Georgia. He died last November at his home near Milltown, Alabama, with cancer, from which he suffered greatly for several years. He was the subject of severe suffering for many weeks previous to his death, which he endured with patience and fortitude. He was mustered into service in 61st at Montgomery under Capt. Jackson, after which he was sent to the second Tennessee, where he was made Capt. of Company C, and there remained till the close of the war. He was married, January 9, 1867 to Miss Edna Dorman, to whom were born five boys and two girls. Two sons and a daughter preceded him to the house of bliss. Mr. Bonner professed a hope in Christ when about eighteen, but never attached himself to any church till 1888 when he united himself with the M. E. church South at Penton, after which he faithfully devoted himself to the cause of Christ. He was a kind husband, devoted father, and died trusting in the Lord. His afflicted relatives and friends find much comfort in the assurance of his happier and more holy state, and would not call him back and subject him to earth's trials, but rather labor to meet him in heaven where all his sufferings are ended. "Remember friends, as you read this, as you are now, so once was he, as he is now, so you must be. Prepare for eternity."
