My father was born Benjamin (Bennie) Smith Hayes Sr and Beatrice Coppedge Hayes in North Carolina. My father was a professional Baseball player and played minor league ball in North Carolina. He had an offer to go with the Pittsburgh Pirates but my grandfather talked him out of it and my father then went on to East Carolina Teacher's College (Now East Carolina University) and earned his Bachelor's in Physical Education and Master's in Business. My father married Ernestine Dail on August 29, 1948. They had four children: Sheryl Christina, born 6/12/53, Kathy Lynn born 9/14/54, Richard Allen born 10/19/62 and Sterling Benson, born 4/13/64. My father was with the CDC in Atlanta when he passed away from complications of colon cancer (emboulism through his heart) at the very young age of 51. Although conservative all his life, he was a strong, strict and loving father.
