Donald Ray "Bob" Alger, 79, a former mayor of Lakeview, died March 17, 2004, of lung cancer at his home in Lakeview.

Mr. Alger was the son of Merl H. and Janice L. (Robertson) Alger of Lakeview.

He was a graduate of Lakeview High School and Spartan College of Aeronautical Engineering College in Tulsa, Okla.

During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps as a navigator on B-29 airplanes.

After the war, he returned to Lakeview to manage the family theater business.

Over the years, he enjoyed traveling around the world with his wife. He was a licensed airplane pilot and flew 27 aircraft.

His involvement and service to his community was extensive. It included two four-year terms as the mayor of Lakeview and 30 years as a registered Boy Scout leader.

He was also a co-leader through the Oregon State University Extension Office in establishing a regular Scout Exchange Program with Japan.

Mr. Alger served three five-year terms as member of Lake County School District 7, was a long-time member of the Rotary Club and the Elks Lodge, and was a 4th Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus.

Among his honors were the St. George Emblem from the Boy Scouts, the Community Service Award from the Lakeview Daughters of the American Revolution, two-time Rotarian of the Year, Rotary's Paul Harris Fellow Award, and the Lake County Chamber of Commerce's First Citizen Award.

Survivors include his wife Noreen O'Keefe Alger of Lakeview; brother and sister-in-law Theresa O'Keefe of Adel; nieces Margaret Dorsett of Chico, Calif., Nora Stangel of Enterprise, Barbara Dawson of Red BLuff, Calif., Marureen Rosetti of Portland, Roxanne Daniel of Temecula, Calif., and Ruth Ellen Sutehall of Chula Vista, Calif.; nephews Buzzy Alger of Playa del Carmen, Mexico, Christopher Alger and Shawn Schadler of Denver, Colo., John O'Keeffe of Adel, and Con O'Keeffe of Portland.

He was preceded in death by his sister Jeanne and son David.
