Mary Elizabeth Wilkerson was born in Tennessee on Oct 17th, 1834. She married Morgan Tennessee Burkhart, also of Tennessee and they had three children before he went to war. Mary Elizabeth was b.1855, Sarah Jane was b.1857 & John Bell was b.1860. Morgan Tennessee entered the Union Army, 1st Regiment, Tennessee Cavalry, Company C as a Captain in 1862. He rose in the ranks and, upon discharge in mid 1863 held the rank of Major. He returned to a happy wife & children. The Burkharts settled in Union County, Tennessee & resumed adding onto their family by having three more children who were Margaret C.,b.1864, James Patton,b.1867 and Melvina A.,b.1868. Tragically, Mary Elizabeth passed on Christmas Eve, 1870 (Dec 24, 1870). Her husband was quite saddened and did not remarry for four years. Mary Elizabeth (Wilkerson) Burkhart is buried at Milan Cemetery, Union County, Tennessee where her husband later requested & was buried also, upon his death in 1902.
