Rev. Hubert L. Barlow, 82, of Long Beach, died Tuesday, December 19, 2006 in Gulfport.
A memorial service will be held for Rev. Barlow on Saturday, January 6, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, Long Beach, MS. A family service was held December 22, at Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Homes, Gulfport and he was buried at Gulf Pines Memorial Gardens in Long Beach.
He served thirteen years in the former Mississippi Conference of the Methodist Church and twenty-three years in North Indiana Conference of the United Methodist Church. He served as a District Superintendent for the Marion District. He retired in May 1987 and became a resident of Long Beach, MS. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the Naval Air Corp.
He served part-time on staff at First United Methodist Church of Long Beach for five years and at the time of his death he was Pastor Emeritus. Besides being a pastor, he served many conference boards and agencies of the United Methodist Church.
Rev. Barlow was a graduate of Millsaps College receiving a degree in Psychology and he received a Masters of Divinty from Duke University in 1951. He continued his studies at Boston University, Purdue University, Wesley Theological and Union Seminaries. He studied abroad at the University of Basel, Switzerland and New College in Edinburgh.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Bell Barlow; two sons, Thomas Barlow and his wife, Luz of St. Charles, IL, Hubert L. Barlow, Jr. and his wife, Brenda of Long Beach; a daughter, Ellen Janya and her husband, Yoshi Hohokabe of Long Island, NY; and three grandchildren, Melissa and Anna Barlow and Shay Hohokabe.
The family requests in lieu of flowers that memorial gifts be made to First United Methodist Church Christian Family Life Center Fund or the Landscaping Fund, 208 Pine Street, Long Beach, MS 39560.
