U.S. Senator, Author of Ohio's first Constitution. A native of Newark, New Jersey, he graduated from the College of New Jersey, became an attorney, and moved to Cincinnati, Ohio in 1796. As a member of the Federalist Party, he was appointed to the Territorial Council of Ohio in 1799 while also serving as the Territorial Judge. When Ohio became a state in 1803, Burnet accepted a position at the Cincinnati College and Medical School as President. He became a member of the Ohio State House of Representatives from 1812 to 1816 and then served as President of the Cincinnati Branch of the United States Bank. He was appointed as an Associate Justice of the Ohio Supreme Court and served from 1821 until his resignation in 1828 to accept an appointment to the United States Senate. Representing Ohio, he was appointed to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of William H. Harrison. He served from 1828 until 1831 and was not a candidate for renomination. An account of his frontier experiences, entitled "Notes on the Early Settlement of the Northwestern Territory", was published in 1847. Burnet was also the author of Ohio's first Constitution which was adopted in 1851. He died in Cincinnati in 1853 when he was 83 years old. He was initially buried in the Presbyterian Cemetery and was later removed to Spring Grove in 1865. His father, William Burnet, was a member of the Continental Congress and Surgeon General of the United States during the Revolutionary War.
