Joseph M. Tuley, a son of Wm. A. and Rebecca Tuley, and one of thirteen children, was born in Lewis county, Missouri, on March 23, 1858, and departed this life at the home of his daughter, Mrs. F. A. Gardhouse in Palmyra on April 14, 1934, at the age of 76 years and 22 days. When a young man he united with the New Prospect Baptist church, a church formerly named by his father, of which he was a charter member. He never moved his membership from this church. He was married in the year 1883 to Miss Sarah Jane Fenstermaker of Monticello and commenced housekeeping on a farm between Lewistown and Monticello where he lived for 46 years. To this union five children were born, two of whom passed away in childhood. His wife passed away in 1897, leaving the small children whom he reared to manhood and womanhood. In 1929 he sold his farm and bought a property in Lewistown where he lived until he suffered a stroke in May 1933. Since that time he has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Gardhouse, of Palmyra. While he improved from the stroke for a while, he finally lost strength and a second stroke rendered him helpless and finally brought to a close a life which, in a humble, quiet manner was lived for and with his children, neighbors and friends. Surviving are the children, one son, W. H. Tuley, of Hamilton, Ohio, and two daughters, Mrs. E. R. Elliott of Hannibal and Mrs. F. A. Gardhouse of Palmyra; also three granddaughters, Helen Louise Gardhouse of Palmyra and Rosamond and Eunice Tuley of Detroit, Mich.; also two brothers, Sam J. Tuley and George W. Tuley of Canton, and two sisters, Mrs. John Gruber of Fullerton, Calif., and Mrs. Andy Gruber of Canton; a number of nephews and nieces; and a host of friends. Joseph Tuley was a man of few words; unpretentious, honored by his friends as a man of high ideals, strict morals and ardently devoted to his children. Funeral services were held in the Lewistown Baptist church Monday morning at 10 o'clock, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Jas. A. Adams. News of his death was not generally known and many of his friends did not know of the service in time to attend. A quartet composed of Mrs. Junior Morriss, Mrs. Boone Nelson, Henry Barkelew and Rev. W. N. Giddens sang his favorite songs. Burial was in the Monticello cemetery.
