James Frush was a bartender in Colburn Barrell's First Street Saloon. In Portland's early days, saloons were hiring halls, post office, community centers, courtrooms, and offered an honest free lunch. This large marble urn sat on the bar in the saloon and, during the holidays, was filled with hot toddies dispensed free of charge to the patrons. In Frush's final days, he requested that his boss place the urn on his grave. For some years after his death, his friends would take the urn back to the saloon each holiday season and toast their favorite bartender. The motif on the lower side of the urn is Bacchus, the god of wine, and the spout in his mouth dispensed the drink. The silver cover and lining were lost years ago.

Suggested edit: Listed on the Muster Roll of Captain Alfred V. Wilson's Company "A" of the first regiment of Oregon mounted volunteers, commanded by Colonel James W. Nesmith, mustered in pursuance of the proclamation of the governor of Oregon territory the eleventh day of October, to serve in the war against the Yakima and other Indians from the thirteenth day of October, 1855, to the close of the war. Pension 1902.
