ANOTHER PIONEER.—Dr. William Caples who for over 40 years has made Portland his home, died at his residence in St. John's yesterday morning at about 6 o'clock. He was aged 86 years and 7 months, and was one of the first physicians to locate In Portland. In fact, he many times referred to his being the first man to "hang out a shingle" in this city. In early days he took an active part in politics and was one of democracy's ablest orators. He secured an original donation claim of 640 acres at St. John's years ago, and has lived upon it since. He has a large family. Judge John F. Caples, the well-known lawyer, is a distant relative.
