His wife, Mary Bothwell Crawford, died as a result of childbirth in May 1837, leaving a family of nine children. A few months later James died. While at a "barn raising" a log slipped and fell on him and broke his leg. As a result of surgery he developed blood poisoning which brought about his death. The children stayed together and the older ones raised the younger ones.
