Jean Acklin, 87, died Friday, April 12, 2013 at Shady Oaks Care Center in Lake City. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, April 15, 2013 at Lampe Funeral Home in Lake City with burial at a later date. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Lampe Funeral Home in Lake City.
Clara Jean Riley was born April 3, 1926 at St. Anthony Hospital in Carroll, Iowa to parents Edward J. and Elizabeth Ross Riley. Jean graduated from Carroll High School in 1944, where she completed training for civil service work, enabling her for employment with the federal government at the Seventh Service Command in Omaha. She returned to marry the love of her life, Charles W. Acklin on October 10, 1945. They made their home in Lake City, raising four children, Linda, Betsy, Kim and Scott. She continued her secretarial career doing home typing, office duties for McVay Hospital (1961-1967), Gray and Gray Law Office in Rockwell City (1967-1972), and Bowie Manufacturing (1972-1982). She then co-managed the Lake City Hotel and apartments with her husband Chuck.
Jean loved playing cards, reading, crocheting, and word search puzzles. She was also an excellent seamstress. Garage sales were a passion, along with antiques. She and Chuck were avid campers, spending winters in Gulf Shores, Alabama or Weslaco, Texas. She loved being around family and friends.
She belonged to the Woodlawn Christian Church in Lake City, and in 2008 she became a resident of Shady Oaks Care Center in Lake City.
She is survived by her children Linda (Mike) Stotts of Lake City, Betsy (Reggie) Gardner of Rockwell City, Scott (MyrlaKloster) Acklin of Rockwell City; five grandchildren Kris (Heather) Miller of Rockwell City, Kelly (Sara) Miller of Rockwell City, Kasi (Jeremy) Miller-Dirks of Davenport, Jennifer (James) Holloway of Waukee, Jason (Jecque) Stotts of Urbandale, thirteen great-grandchildren, and a sister-in-law Ruth Riley of Redmond, WA.
Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Chuck in 2002, daughter Kim Ellen Acklin, and brother Ross Riley.
