John Ross Simonton

John Ross Simonton was born Aug. 6, 1816 near Greenville, Darke County, Ohio, son of Davis Ross Simonton and Anna Ross, brother to John Ross, Priscilla, Jennie, Sarah and Alice. When Alice was a baby, their father David met with an accident when the horse that he was riding home, made a misstep and both the horse and rider fell into the river and the rider drowned.

In 1840 John Ross married Mary Ann Nottingham in Muncie, Ind. In 1849 he left Liberty Mills, Ind. and went by way of the Panama to the gold fields of California, leaving his wife and two small children, Rolvin David and Sarah Jane with relatives. After returning with no gold, they lived in Liberty Mills and LaGro, Ind. for several years, and then migrated to northern Mich., west of LeRoy, Osceola County. John Ross Simonton and his half sisters (Rebecca Green Johnson) husband, J.S. Johnson (who the Johnson school was named for) went first by train to Paris, Mi. and then tramped the last 30 miles. John built a one room log cabin, and then sent for his family in 1867. They came by ox team and heavy wagons loaded with supplies to live in the wilderness. Of the eight children of John Ross and Mary Ann, six grew up in the LeRoy area, Alexander, Mark, Rolvin, Sarah, Dorcas, and Olive. A two-year-old boy had been adopted also. John Ross spent the rest of his life farming and blacksmithing west of LeRoy. He died Oct. 26, 1893. Frank continued living there for several years and farmed.

John Ross Simonton and his wife are buried in the LeRoy Cemetery three miles west of LeRoy. Mary Ann Nottingham Simonton died March 27, 1893. One hundred twenty eight years later there are descendants still living in Osceola County in and around the LeRoy area.
