Mr. Hodge was one of the pioneer citizens of this county. He was born in October 1816 and came to Illinois in the spring of 1827 with his father, Jonathan Hodge and family who settled in Stout's Grove. In early life he was a farmer but later he became a merchant in Danvers where he did business for about 35 years and commanded the love and confidence of everyone who ever knew him. His health at last failing he retired from business and two years since removed to this city, a confirmed invalid. Mr. Hodge was a shrewd, cautious and highly successful business man. He leaves a fortune estimated at $50,000 to $75,000. It consists in part of real estate in Danvers and in farms but is largely composed of interest bearing securities, as mortgages and the like. He sold considerable of his real estate in the past few years.

Mr. Hodge was the head of a happy household. On July 4, 1851 he married Mary C. Clark, who survives. They have 8 surviving children: Mrs.Marie Demange of this city, Mrs. Jennie McNaught of Seattle, WA, Misses Alice, Minnie, Lelia, Emma and Julia who reside at home. One son, Clark is the youngest and is 7 or 8 years old. Mr. Hodge was a man of genial, kindly nature and had an unusually large circle of warm personal friends. His religious views were clear and decided and he was a consistent and honored member of the Christian Church.
