Earl grew up in Columbus, Ohio, where he played football for East High. He sang at the White House for Warren G. Harding's Inauguration. In 1918 he joined the army as an ambulance driver, but the war ended before he saw action. In 1919 he worked his way over to England,Wales,and France on a cattle boat. He attended Boston University School of Social Work & Religious Education, and was an honorary member of the class of '27. He sang with the American Light Opera Company, hitchhiking back to Boston whenever he had enough money to attend school. While in New York in the 30's, he sang with the Orpheus Glee Club and worked at Hastings House. He introduced "Me and My Shadow" on the radio in Boston. He was active with the International Sunday School Association and the American Youth Foundation Camps at Lake Geneva, WI and Merrowvista in NH. He and his wife Mildred helped to re-open Merrowvista after the second world war. While living in Dedham and then Needham,MA he was a member of the Men's Double Quartet at the Allin Congregational Chuch. He, Mildred,and their two daughters, Carol and Joyce, lived in Newton, MA for 26 years, where he worked with the Newton Welfare Department. He was an active leader at Central Congregational Church, The Highland Glee Club, and the Boston Welsh Society, and was an auxiliary policeman in Needham and Newton. In 1978, he and Mildred moved to Cape Cod, spending part of the winters in Barefoot Bay, FL. Earl was known for his wonderful sense of humor, his beautiful tenor voice & his warmth that showed unfailing compassion and consideration for everyone he met.
