Ed was the son of Andrew Mathis, Jr. and Rachel White Wallis. The Wallis family lived on the Cumberland River in TN. Moved to MO by ox team & wagon in 1850's. The family settled near the [High] Knob by Pigeon Creek, Dent County, Missouri. He married Sally Patterson 22 February 1877 in Dent County. They were the parents of nine chilren:
John Wesley married Alice Drucilla Woodward & Dola Race Davis; Mary E.; Eda Vernetta married Peter Thomas Floyd; Willie E.; Martha; Omer Jordan married Iva E. Trout and Della 'Mae' Jones; Orvis Earl married Madra Fanny 'May' Hebblethwaite; Ray; and Baby Boy.
