Colonel, 1st Tennessee Infantry USA

Article, Knoxville Daily Chronicle, Tuesday, May 5, 1885, Vol. XV, Number 270: Col. R. K. Byrd. Death of the Brave Old Hero of Two Wars. Emory Gap, Tenn., May 3 -- Colonel Robert K. Byrd, the hero of two wars, died yesterday morning at 10:30 o'clock at his home in roane county. Col. Byrd has been sick now for more than a year, and during that time has displayed a wonderful character for manly patience and fortitude. Never sick a day before in his life scarcely, this came on him with all the force imaginable, but he bore it like a man and a christian. He was thoroughly prepared to go, there having been a complete change of heart in his case. A few days since he invited all his friends to his house to sing and pray with him, and there was a large attendance. Col. Byrd was an officer in the Mexican war and did a valuable service, having been mentioned more than once for his gallant conduct. He organized the first regiment of Tennessee volunteers for the Union army in the late war. He remained with his regiment the full three years for which he enlisted, and did much hard service. He was an efficient officer and a brave man. He never shirked or evaded his duties as an officer or a soldier. He has taken an active part in politics since the war. He was at one time a candidate for Congress and served a term in the State Senate. After the war, he became a very liberal man, his favorite expression being: "I went into the war to save my country from the foolishness of my friends. We saved the country, now in the name of God, let us preserve our liberty." Col. Byrd was a very popular man with everybody. He was a genial, whole-hearted, generous man, and his loss is mourned by a host of friends in this and adjoining counties.
