Miss Mary Darwin Beirne Cook, 97

Tuesday, April 20, 1909 - Tuesday, January 23, 2007

Mary Beirne Darwin Cook, 97, of Huntsville died Tuesday

A native of Huntsville, "Miss Mary Beirne" established the city's first accredited kindergarten after graduating from Wheelock College in Boston. She gave children a head start at the McClung Street Kindergarten for 12 years before marrying the Rev. Robert Cook. They lived in Sheffield and Tuscaloosa, where he was the Episcopal rector of Grace Church and Christ Church. They then moved back to Huntsville, where he was rector of Holy Cross St. Christopher's and, after retiring, assistant at the Church of the Nativity.

Mrs. Cook was an accomplished artist, specializing in pastels of children. Her artistic talents were also utilized in doing exquisite needlework, fashioning museum-quality clothing for the world-renowned portrait dolls made by her sister, Martha Thompson.

She is survived by her husband, the Rev. Robert Cook; their children, Wanda Cates of West Blocton and Robert Jackson Cook of Lakewood, Colo.; nieces, Mary Darwin Johnson of Huntsville and Shelby Thompson Shrigley of Colorado; nephew, James Lanier Darwin of Arizona; four grandchildren, and a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces, and great-great-nephews.

Mrs. Cook will lie in repose at her home at 450 McClung Avenue. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Church of the Nativity with the Rev. Andy Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery with Laughlin Service Funeral Home in charge.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of the Nativity or to one of the other Episcopal churches of which she was a part.
