Mary Rebecca Dawson was the daughter of William James Dawson and his wife Rebecca Tee. She was born at 5 Salisbury Cresent, Newington, Surrey. In 1898 she married Albert "Bert" Joseph Nicholls. Together they had two children, Horace Albert Wager Nicholls and Dorothy Alice W Nicholls.

Horace Albert Wager Nicholls was born about 1900-he joined the Royal Navy, Service No: M/9973, but tragically became a victim of the Great War on 9th April 1917 at the age of just 17. He served as a Boy/Shipwright on H.M.S. "Pembroke" and was buried in the Naval Reservation at Gillingham Woodlands Cemetery, plot 24. 1249.

Mary's husband Albert was a fireman in the hometown. In 1929 he had participated in a fire demonstration at the local Gillingham Park Fete. Tragically the demonstration went horribly wrong and Albert and fourteen others perished that evening.

Albert was laid to rest in their son's war grave. Following her death, Mary was also laid to rest along with her husband and her son.

Their daughter Dorothy would go on to marry William Bowring.
