NEW YORK TIMES, AUGUST 25, 1959
Charles Morse, Industrialist, 86
Ex-President of Fairbanks, Morse is Dead--Opposed Brother in Proxy Fight--Special to the New York Times
Lake Forest, Ill., Aug 24--
Charles Hosmer Morse Sr., former president and director of Fairbanks, Morse & Co., manufacturers of heavy machinery, died here today at the age of 86. He had suffered from a heart ailment and that was said to have been the cause of his death.
Mr. Morse was the son of Charles H. Morse, founder of Fairbanks, Morse, who died in 1921. The younger Mr. Morse became president of the firm in 1915. He held membership on its board, except for short periods until 1956 when he resigned
His departure from the family firm came at the climax of a fight for control of the company. He sided with Leopold D. Silberstein of the Penn-Texas Corporation, a holding company. The concern eventually gained control of 77 per cent of the stock in a bitter proxy fight.
Mr. Morse's sale of stock to Mr. Silbertstein was his final fight with his brother, Col. Robert H. Morse, then chairman of the firm and now retired. They had opposed each other on corporate matters at times from 1939 until the proxy battle.
Born in Chicago on Aug. 13, 1873, Mr. Morse attended schools there before entering the University of Michigan where he took a degree in 1895 and added a second degree in mechanical engineering, two years later. He then entered the family business
A director of the Harris Trust and Savings Ban, Mr. Morse also was a trustee of Beloit College. He was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and Society of Colonial Wars.
Mr. Morse married Charlotte Ingersoll in 1900 in Beloit, Wis. She died in March, 1958.
Survivors, in addition to his brother, are two daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Covington and Mrs. Martha ReQua; a son, Charles H. Jr., and eleven grandchildren.
