His parents are Sgt. George Gwinnup (1754-1840) and Margaret Jane Simpson (1767-1857). More info to come soon regarding parents, siblings, spouse, and children.

John C. Gwinnup was born in Morris, New Jersey on March 16, 1784. He married Theodocia Norcross in about 1805, perhaps in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Apparently, due to John's accent, locals tagged him with the nickname of "Dutch."

John's father received a bounty of 100 acres of land in Hamilton County, Ohio and moved his family west to claim the bounty for his service in the Revolutionary War (2nd New Jersey Infantry Regiment, Continental Army). John and Theodocia moved west at about the same time, and eventually moved to Eastern Indiana, and settled in Rush County.

John became a succeful and moderately wealthy farmer. He was apparently literate. Sarah L. Jinks, a descendant that has inspected some of the deeds and land records has noted that she was impressed by his careful and beautiful signature.

John and Theodocia had eleven (11) children: George Gwinnup (abt 1807 - abt 1860), Charles (W) Gwinnup/Guinnup (abt 1809 - 1863), Sarah Gwinnup (1811 - 1903), Archibald Gwinnup (abt 1814 - ?), William John Gwinnup (1817 - 1887), Parmelia Gwinnup (1819 - 1877), Trophonia Gwinnup (abt 1820 - aft 1840), John Gwinnup, Jr. (abt 1825 - 1896), Job Gwinnup (1828 - 1877), Joseph Gwinnup (1830 - ?), and Calvin (1831 - aft 1900).
