Florence Speelmon, 88, of Taylorsville, Utah, formerly of Terreton, Idaho, died April 3, 2010 at the home of her daughter.

She was born in Sutherland, Utah to Edward Lawrence and Josephine Bennett Abbott.

She loved growing up on her family farm, where she learned the value of hard work. She attended school in Sutherland and graduated from Delta High School. She loved playing softball, swimming, 4-H, dancing, and cookouts in the canyon. During the World War II, she was a welder in the shipyards in California.

She married Max Stewart and later divorced. On August 2, 1948, she married Walter Speelmon in Dillon, Montana. This union included Walt's three children: Dwaine, Betty, and Leland; and Florence's children: Richard, Ramona, Maxine and Ben. Her honeymoon was spent cooking three meals a day for twenty-two hired men.

Many wonderful years were spent on the family farm in Terreton, where she was a critical partner in making the farm a success. She cooked for large crews of men who helped with the harvest. She was an outstanding cook and was especially known for her homemade bread. Florence was active in community and church. She helped establish the Mud Lake Museum and was a charter member of the Mud Lake Historical Society.

As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, she served in many positions in the Primary, Mutual, and Relief Society. She also served as a missionary in the Family and Church History Mission in Salt Lake City.

Survivors include children: Leland (Tamara) Speelmon, Ogden, Utah; Richard (Fran) Speelmon, Madera, CA; Ramona (Frank) Ammons, Taylorsville, UT; Maxine (Manny) Koenigsberg, Las Vegas, NV; Ben (Annette) Speelmon, Terreton, ID; son-in-law, Merrill (Betty, deceased) Jemmett, Terreton, ID; Mark (Eva) Abbott, American Fork, UT; thirty-two grandchildren and numerous great and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter; son, Dwaine (Spud) Speelmon; daughter, Betty Jemmett; grandson, David Speelmon; and four brothers and a sister.

Graveside Services and burial will be held on Wednesday, April 7, 2010, at West Jefferson Memorial Cemetery, Terreton, Idaho, at 1:00 p.m. with Bishop Scott Blackham officiating.
