Chess Player. Born in Germany, he defeated the reining World Chess Champion Adolf Anderssen in 1866 and retained the title of World Champion until 1894. when he was defeated by Dr. Emanuel Lasker. He moved to America in 1883, after spending 21 years in London. He is considered the most rational of champions, who changed the game of chess from a flashy contest of daring offensive moves to a defensive game of exhaustively thought-out strategies.
