George Hampton "Pops" Roach, 86, of Elgin, passed away, Sunday, Sept. 24, 2000 in the Alderwood Health Care Center after a short illness.
His life started on Sept. 28, 1913 in Galt, Mo., the son of James and Bertha Moberly Roach.
His family resided in Sullivan County, Mo. at the time of his birth. For 33 years, George could be seen pumping gas and changing oil at Bunges Tire and Service Center. He continued servicing customers until 30 days before his 70th birthday and then stayed home and was a neighbor and friend to everyone. He proudly served our country in W.W. II and was honorably discharged in 1944 with many ribbons and medals.
All the children in his neighborhood know him as "Pops" and his love for little children was among his finer points. He loved them all. His babies were precious in his sight. His strong love of all his family, especially the babies, was evident at the very end of his life.
Pops, as we all knew him by, was a great and wonderful man. He would give of himself to anybody who needed his help. He had a sense of humor that always had us laughing. Pops will be deeply missed by his remaining family which include his son, James (Shirley) Roach; his step-children, Cindy (Mark) Hochleutner, Michael (Cheryl) Davis Sr., Peggy Doyle, Kathy Doyle, Vernon Doyle, Judith (Procoro) Sufuentes, Karen Davis, Sandy Clark and his only remaining sibling; a sister, Veon Schlicht. Pops leave behind 24 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; three great great-grandchildren and many other relatives; and friends who will greatly miss home and his loving and caring ways.
Pops is being greeted in heaven by his wife, Carol; six brothers; a sister; a step-daughter, Sue Sims; and his two little grandchildren, Jennifer and Stella Sanchez.
He suffered little before the Lord called him home to heaven. We were with him for a few short years it seems and then the end was near, but for Pops it is now the beginning of his everlasting life with Jesus. We all loved him and held him till the very end and his memory will live in all of us forever.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin, the Rev. Richard R. Sanders officiating. Burial will be in Lakewood Memorial Park.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m., Tuesday in the funeral home.
Please do not send flowers, but help the children who Pops so loved and make memorials to TeamKid, c/o Larkin Ave. Baptist Church, 1158 Larkin Ave., Elgin or to any other children's charity.
