Quillen Phillip Hayes was the son of Martin F. and Mary Marie Hayes (nee Meyer). He was in the United States Navy from 1935 - 1950. He enlisted in Somerset, KY and separated in Philadelphia, PA. His rank was Engineman Chief. He was part of Squadron One PT-Boats at Pearl Harbor when it was attacked. He traveled to the Phillippines, fought in the battle of Midway and the Aleutians. He went to the Solomon Islands, the Guadalcanal, the Panama Sea Frontier and Funafuti as part of Squadron Two and Three. Quillen and President John F. Kennedy (PT-109) were in the Solomon Islands at the same time on different PT boats as part of Squadron Two.He was on PT boats 22, 25, 37 and 43, but mostly 22 and 25.

He received the following medals: WW II Victory Medal, American Area Campaign Medal, European Campaign Medal, African Middle Eastern Area Medal, Asiatic Pacific Area Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Navy Occupation Medal, American Defense Medal. He married Alma D. Harmon on May 31, 1952.
