Enlisted on 6/4/1861 at New Orleans, LA, he was elected as Captain of "Carondelet Invincibles", 5th Regiment Louisiana Volunteers. This Company became "I" Co. LA 5th Infantry.
Promoted 10/17/1862 to Major, Field & Staff; furloughed 30 days.
Wounded 9/17/1862 Sharpsburg, MD.
Promoted to Lt Col 1/3/1863.
Wounded 5/4/1863 2nd Battle of Fredericksburg, VA.
Absent, sick with Rheumatism 1/14/1864 Richmond, VA.
Joined all-volunteer Company to defend against Ulf Dahlgren's Raid early 3/1864.
Returned to unit 3/1864 at Raccoon Ford, VA.
He was Killed In Action in the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, VA.
"A Louisiana Colonel sprang out of the ditch and said ‘Men, don't be scared; be steady and follow me, I'll take you out of here'. Poor fellow. We moved quickly at his brave offer, but he didn't go far with us before he fell dead."

The 5th Infantry Regiment completed its organization at New Orleans, Louisiana, in May, 1861 with men from New Orleans and the parishes of St. Bernard, Bienville, De Soto, Lafourche, and Ouachita.
