He enlisted in the Army on August 8, 1941, prior to the war, in Trenton, New Jersey. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Driver and as being Married.

James was "Killed In Action" during the invasion of Normandy, France.

He had served in the Army for two years and eleven months at the time of his death and was awarded the Purple Heart.
