Son of James Sheean and Mary Lorden, immigrants from Ireland. Like the vast majority of the males in this family, was an attorney all his life. Wife was sister of John Aaron Rawlins and Jeremiah was brother of John Aaron's law partner David Sheean. Drowning while bathing in the Wapsipinicon River.

In the interest of adding something about his character, the Annual Proceedings of the Iowa State Bar (1896) includes:

"In his business and personal relations Mr Sheean was a man of the strictest integrity. His generosity to the poor and the stranger was proverbial. In his passing another of the devotees who had consecrated his life to the service of the law rather than the gathering of fat fees, has been taken away."
