Town Marshal Tried to Keep Boys Straight

Ernest L. McCoy, 73, who died today, was a town marshal who preferred to try to prevent crime rather than inflict punishment for it. He believed in trying to prevent trouble by talking to youngsters beforehand. A resident of 4723 Mitchner, Lawrence, he died in Veterans Hospital on West 10th. A life resident of Lawrence, Mr. McCoy, who was known familiarly as Ern or Mac, took keen interest in any civic project involving his home town. For two terms he was a member and president of the Lawrence Town Board.
While serving as a member of the Town Board, Mr. McCoy was instrumental in the establishment of the Lawrence Water Works. At the time of his death he was superintendent of the water works as well as town marshal. For 17 years prior to his becoming superintendent of the water works, Mr. McCoy worked as stockman for Block's.
In the infantry during the Spanish-American War Mr. McCoy served in the Philippine Islands.
All his life Mr. McCoy had been keenly interested in athletics,and in baseball particularly. He had been able to watch the first three games of the recent World Series on television,and, although unable to watch the last three, had inquired about them.
A member of the Oaklandon Christian Church, Mr. McCoy had taken an active part in church affairs until a year ago and had served on the board of trustees. He was also a member of the Mystic Circle Masonic Lodge at Lawrence and a member of the Association of Police Chiefs. The McCord Funeral Home,Oaklandon, is making funeral arrangements. Survivors are the widow, Fairley McCoy; five daughters,Bernice Hickman, Ft.Riley,Kas.; Donna Jean Sullivan, Indianapolis, and Charlene Downey, Mary Gough and Rema Hartman, Lawrence; two sons,Charles and Edgar McCoy,of Lawrence; 12 grardchildren and three great-grandchildren.
