The Life of John Allen Weems, Sr.

After a year-long illness, God sent an angel to the University of Maryland Regional Medical Center in LaPlata, Maryland to escort John Allen Weems, Sr. home.

John was born to the late Aubray Weems and Hattie Spencer Galloway, brother to the late Mary Galloway. John achieved much in life with only a 6th Grade education from the Prince George’s County Public School System. He was called to service by the United States Navy in 1944 for duty in World War II. John Weems was discharged a short time afterwards. He was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Mary Hilda Harrison on August 31, 1939, where they resided in Upper Marlboro and raised thirteen children.

After 30+ years of employment as a truck driver and grounds maintenance worker, he retired on October 25, 1975 from the U.S. Census Bureau in Suitland, Maryland and began considering other means of providing for his family.

John is survived by 13 children: Ellen Beatrice (Louis) Savoy, Marie (Will) Contee, Sarah Hogan, John “Johnny” Weems, Jr., Joseph Norman “Archie” (Susan) Weems, Constance Victoria (Robert) Chesley, Catherine Hattie “Cathy” (George) Mayfield, Leo Sylvester Weems, Mildred “Mimi” (Richard) Hemphill, Carol Melissa (Wendell) Thomas, Juanita (Troy) Butler, Bonita Colbert (Roy Bridges) and Angela “Angie” Marie (Keith) Ayres; grandchildren Marvin Contee, Terry Contee, William “Louis” (Vikki) Savoy, Jr., Michelle Gross, Gabrielle (Kurt) Armstrong, Jonathan (Mitzi) Brooks, Veronica Chesley, Christina Chesley, Denise Weems, Leo Weems, Jr., Alison (Robert) Nazareno, Tya Johnson, Alicia Hemphill-Permenter, Richard “Ricky” (Lamea) Colbert, III, Ashley (Ovidio) Gonzalez, Whitney Thomas; Brandon (Natia) Colbert, Aubree Hemphill; and; only niece on the Spencer side, Shirley Spencer Wallace;- a multitude of great & great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

John was preceded in death by his uncles Gary Weems, Sr., Nat Stewart, Fred Smith, John H. Wedge; loving aunts Lucille Elizabeth Smith, Bessie (By) Spencer; Julia Stewart, Mamie Emily Wedge; brothers-in-law William (Uncle Billy) Turner, Charles Donald Magruder, Mike Harrison, William “Weedy” Harrison, Leo Harrison, and Bubba Harrison; sisters-in-law Louise Turner; Ella Mae Magruder and Helen Harrison; nephews Clifton Webster Wallace and Clarence Harrison; and granddaughter Teresa Darlene Savoy; and friend Mary Ann Fletcher.
