Leonard Henderson was born in the Nutbush community near Williamsboro, Granville county, NC. He was the third son of Richard Henderson and Elizabeth Keeling. His siblings were Frances McCay, Richard, Archibald, Elizabeth Alexander, and John Lawson.

On 3 Nov 1795 he became the husband of Frances Farrar, the niece of Judge John Williams who had guided his legal studies. This union was blessed with four sons and two daughters: Archibald Erskine, William Farrar, MD, John Leonard, Richard, Frances Taylor and Lucy Sneed.

He was a large man over six feet tall weighing 212 pounds, dark hair, grey eyes. "Dictionary of NC Biography", Vol 3.

Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court from 1829 to 1833, associate judge of that court beforehand. Henderson, North Carolina; Hendersonville, North Carolina; and Henderson County, North Carolina are named for him.

He died in Williamsboro, Granville County now Vance County, NC. He lies in peace at Montpelier where he had spent so much of his childhood after the death of his parents.
