Musician. Born in Sheffield, England, he was a cornet player regarded as the founder of modern band music in the United States. After relocating to America in the early 1850s, as a bandmaster and composer, he opened the Brass Band School of New York. He was the very first to strike up his band for a free concert in the Central Park Ramble, which became a regular series of open air performances in the city. He also conducted the 7th Regiment New York National Guard Band, composed for Broadway plays and published much of his musical compositions.
