John L. Moore was born about 1803 in Old Buncombe County, NC, on the head waters of the French Broad River. John and his father-in-law John Reaps came into the Habersham County area about 1835 with their families. John Moore had come into the area earlier, 1830, but returned to North Carolina to bring his family back to Georgia. John was married to Mary Lyday. Their three children were William R born 1826, Elizabeth Caroline born 1827 and Maryan born 1829. The daughter Elizabeth married John Thompson Whisenant and they removed to Texas. Both William R and Maryan married in Georgia and made their home there. The old Moore home was on Moore's Creek, near the present-day Alex Mountain Road. They were buried in the cemetery that is across the road from the Bethlehem Baptist Church. There is a section of the cemetery which holds several of the Moore and Whisenant families, but only one stone stands from the long past, and it is not in good shape for reading. Next to the old stone are at least xix unmarked gravesites, possibly stones which have deteriorated. A grandson, John H. Moore, son of William R. is buried next to the old stone. Other members of William's family are buried in a Harkins-Moore Cemetery on Sam Bell Road.
