MONTICELLO--Services for Alvin J. Anderson, 73, of 5414N 700E, Monticello, will be held at 10:30 a.m Tuesday in Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home.
He died at 9:35 p.m. Friday in White County Memorial Hospital. He had been in failing health four years and seriously ill three months.
Born May 13, 1923 in Pulaski County, he was the son of James D. and Dollie Mae White Anderson. On Sept. 20, 1945, in White County, he was married to Margaret I. Crosby, who survives.
A lifelong resident of the Sitka area of Carroll and White counties, Mr. Anderson was a retired farmer. He attended Sitka Baptist Church and was a member of American Legion post 81, AMVETS post 91, Pheasants Forever and the National Rifle Association.
He served in the 8th Air Force, 379th Squadron, from 1942 to 1945 as a top turret gunner on a B-17 Bomber. He flew in 30 missions over Berlin and in the first daylight raid over Berlin. he received the good conduct medal, European Theater of Operations two Battle Stars, Distinguished Flying Cross, three Oak Leaf Clusters Air Medal, Freedom Medal and the American Campaign Medal.
He attended school in Sitka and Buffalo and graduated from Buffalo High School in 1942.
Also surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Don "Bonnie L." Wamsley, Monticello; two sons, Charles J. Anderson, Burrows, and Larry L. Anderson, Monticello; one sister, Mrs. Eugene "Nellie" Crosby, Monticello; two brothers, Don F. Anderson and George G. Anderson, both of Monticello; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
One brother preceded in death.
The Rev. Dr. James Elliott will officiate at the services. Burial with military rites, will be in Pro Cemetery, Pulaski County.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the ALS Lou Gehrig's disease Foundation.
