Betty Wunder Morf, 89, of Westminster Canterbury of the Blue Ridge in Charlottesville, died on Tuesday, March 30, 2010, after a lengthy illness.
She was born on December 24, 1920, the only child of Jenny Moe Wunder and Berthold H. Wunder. She was preceded in death by her father. He was president of the New York Produce Exchange and died at a very early age, after which Betty and her mother moved to Hawaii.
She was also preceded in death by her mother; and her first husband, Alan Schirmer, a graduate of the United States Naval Academy and a Naval Aviator who died in 1943 in the line of duty.
Betty traveled to Beaufort, South Carolina, in 1944, to visit Navy friends she had known in Hawaii. It was there she met Bob who was a flight instructor at the Naval Air Station in Beaufort. When Bob was later ordered to San Diego and Alameda, California, for fleet duty in the Pacific, he renewed contact with Betty who was living in Alameda. Following Bob's return from the Pacific, he and Betty were married in the chapel at the Naval Air Station in Olathe, Kansas, on August 14, 1945 at 7 p.m. (An hour after President Truman's 6 p.m. announcement of the Japanese surrender. -- VJ Day -- Betty who was an eye witness to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, was joined by millions celebrating her wedding day and the end of the war in the Pacific.)
Betty was always a devoted wife and a loving mother who cared deeply about her family, her friends and neighbors, and the world of nature. She taught her daughters to be kind to animals, to garden organically and to appreciate all the beauty in the world. With Bob, she created lovely homes in Tauxmont and Belle Haven, Virginia, Sea Girt, New Jersey, and Rectortown, Virginia. Those homes were all filled with color, plants, pictures and wonderful smells coming from the kitchen. Betty was a self-taught and adventurous gourmet cook. She was so proud of the fact that her daughter, Heidi, is an accomplished chef.
Betty was a wonderful gardener. She created beautiful flower gardens at her homes and was an active member in garden clubs wherever she lived. She was also very supportive of SPCA's and Animal Shelters.
Betty was a marvelous hostess who made everyone feel welcome and appreciated. She loved to laugh, was a wonderful companion, and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
She is survived by her husband, Bob, of 64 years. She recently said with a smile that one of her greatest accomplishments was putting up with him for that many years!!! Betty is also survived by her two daughters, Barry Feit and her husband, Alan Feit, of Lumberton, New Jersey, and Heidi Morf and her husband, Vinnie Deluise, of Flint Hill, Virginia; and one granddaughter, Sarah Feit of Lincoln, Nebraska.
