Obituary of F. P. Smith
Frank P. Smith was born in Kane county, Illinois, Nov. 25, 1840. He died at Lewis, Kansas, May 23, 1926. He served two years in the Union army of the Civil War. He was married to Helen Chapman of Plato, Illinois, who survives him, in 1863. In 1886 he came to Kansas, where he has made his home since. F. P. Smith was the first posmaster of Lewis and served in that capacity for 15 years. He erected one of the first store buildings in town and coducted a general merchandise business until 1903, when he retired frome active business life. He has been vice president of the Home State Bank for many years. The deceased had been in poor health for a number of years. He had accepted the fact that he could not live, but maintained an interst in the lives about him until the very last. F. P. Smith is survived by his wife, Mrs. Helen Smith, and four children, Ernest C., Frank A., Adin C., and Nellie M. A daughter Maggie J., died in 1922. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoonat the Methodist church, Rev. Corrie officiating. Interment was made in Wayne cemetery. The pall-bearers were: A.E. Jarvis, Jas. F. Malin, Harvey Nelson, Hosea Denney, Robert Wolfe and Will Huffman.

F.P. SMITH

Frank P. Smith was born in Kane County, Illinois, November 25,1840. His early life was spent on the farm. In1861 he enlisted in Company A, Eighth Illinois Cavalry and served nearly two years in the Union Army. He was discharged because of disability. He was married on Christmas Day, 1863 to Helen M. Chapman at Plato, Illinois. To them were born five children; Ernest C., Frank A., Adin C., Nellie M., and Maggie J.

In 1873 Mr. Smith was employed as clerk at Elburn, Illinois in a post office and drug store. In 1885 he engaged in the general merchandise business for himself at Batavia, Illinois. In 1886 the Smiths moved to Lewis, Kansas. Mr.Smith was one of the first postmasters at Lewis. He erected the second, if not the first, store building in Lewis. From 1886 until 1903 he conducted a general merchandise business in Lewis. He furnished supplies to all the early pioneers of this area. He retired from active business in
January 1903.

Frank P. Smith helped to organize the Home State Bank and was the vice-president of the Home State Bank for a number of years. The F.P. Smith home was at the corner of Main Street and Avenue C. Mr. Smith passed away May 23,1926, at the age of 86. At the time of his death his store building housed the Santa Fe Trail Restaurant.
