James is the son of William Green Aaron, Sr., and Margaret Powell. He moved to Mississippi around 1875 and married Ruth Melvinia White on Dec. 12, 1878, in Monroe County, MS. By 1880, they had settled and began farming near Toccopola, Pontotoc County, MS, where they had nine children: Caroline (1877-1960), Sofillia (1879-1880), James Alford (1881-1948), William Lee (1884-1962), Elbert Barney (1886-1910), Joe Richard (1888-1967), John L. (1891-1913), Carrie L. (1893-1948), and Curtis "Curt" (1897-1972).

James had 7 full siblings: Zelphia (1846-1930), Eliza Jane (1848-1881), Mary Catherine (b. 1849), Ulsey D. (1852-1940), Sarah (1854-1920), William Green, Jr, (1858-1918), and John Wesley (1861-1919). After the death of James' mother Margaret, his father married Jane Katherine Key (1840-1924). From that marriage, James has 5 half siblings: Docia (1874-1960), Charles R.(1875-1946), Martin Van Buren (1877-1949), Sophronia (1879-1953) and Samuel James (1882-1962).
