Velma Leona Cordes
July 10, 1919–July 6, 2004
Velma Leona CORDES, 84, formerly of 411 W. South St., Argos, passed away at 2:10 p.m. Tuesday at the Hickory Creek at Rochester nursing home where she was a resident. Her health had been failing for the past three years.
She was born in Marshall County near Argos as the daughter of Peter and Nellie Large Abair. She lived her entire life in the Argos community until moving to Rochester in 2001. She married Arthur Cordes on Jan. 8, 1955, in Richland Center near Rochester. He preceded her in death June 12, 1991.
Mrs. Cordes was a homemaker and had been employed as a nurse's aide for 15 years in nursing homes in the Argos and Plymouth communities. She was a former member of the Gilead Church, Argos. In her younger years, she enjoyed embroidery for which she was well known by family and friends. Other enjoyed pastimes included: attending local Marshall County auctions, touring the Indiana countryside with her late husband and the lost art of just visiting with friends and neighbors. In her later years, she was fond of working crossword puzzle books; however, she valued time with her grandchildren and family most of all.
She is survived by two daughters, Cherikee Miller and husband Larry, Warsaw, and Brenda McKee and husband Ron, Rochester; three grandchildren, Tracey Rickman and husband George, Warsaw, Ryan Miller, Warsaw, and Jeremy McKee, Rochester; five great-grandchildren, Georgie Rickman, Alex Rickman, Katlyn Miller, Maverick Miller and Arianna McKee. Her parents, husband, and a brother, Harold Abair, preceded her in death.
Her funeral service is 1 p.m. Friday at Grossman Funeral Home, 208 N. Michigan St., Argos, with Pastor Richard Dean officiating. Interment is at the Rochester Independent Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the funeral home from 4-8 p.m. Thursday or one hour prior to her service Friday. Her family has requested any memorials be made to either the John McKee Memorial Scholarship Fund or the Hickory Creek at Rochester Landscaping Fund. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
